It amazes me how resilient the human body is! Digestion is a complex process with many steps; it is essential for wellbeing and vitality, yet many people know very little about it and our society certainly doesn’t foster a healthy understanding of digestion. Digestion starts before food enters your mouth, at least it should, with your enzymes getting ready to do their part of the job. What you eat, how you eat, your microbiome, lifestyle and environmental exposures, all affect digestion. And if you can’t digest, you can’t absorb nutrients into your blood stream and cells to keep you healthy.
Most people don’t experience the effects of poor digestion until years after their gut is compromised. This can take the form of many illnesses and challenging health conditions, not just the ones obviously associated with the gut such as, IBS, food intolerances, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion, IBD. It’s never too soon to take steps to heal your gut and foster healthy digestion.
Sleep, Stress and Mood Management
Anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance and feeling stressed out are so common today that many people think they’re normal, or just try to push on through them because their situation seems to hard to address. It is often overwhelming … where would you start?!!
However if you don’t take steps to stop this pattern, it will eventually stop you. Your health will fail, your relationships will be harmed, and the very essence of YOU will not be able to flourish.
Unraveling this picture without tipping over often needs insights, and strategies, and support. There is two-way communication between your body and brain, which means that a combination of steps is often more effective at getting the successful results you want. Lifestyle interventions, natural remedies, mindfulness and ensuring good nutrient support can all work together to keep you happy and chill.
Do you catch every bug around? Suffer from repetitive infections? Sinusitis? bronchitis? UTI’s?, skin infections?, achy joints and muscles? Are you chronically inflamed? Fatigued? Insomniac? Have an auto-immune condition?
If so, your immune system is either losing the fight to keep you functioning, or has swung into the overactive state of auto immunity. Either way your immunity is over faced or under resourced and has lost self-regulation. Your immunity needs some concentrated attention with some TLC, and exploration the underlying causes that have tipped the balance. Don’t put up with it, take steps towards wellness.
Lack of energy? Generally feeling ill? Appetite comes and goes? Nausea? Skin rashes? Headaches? Waking in the night?
Toxicity can show up in many different symptoms because every cell in your body produces byproducts that need to be detoxified and removed from your body, not to mention the environmental chemicals that you’re exposed to daily. Detoxification is a three-phase process that needs good nutrition to be effective. Your liver processes toxic substances through chemical pathways that need specific enzymes and other proteins, plus vitamins and minerals to complete the process. The first step is oxidation, if toxins pass through phase one, but phase two nutrients aren’t available to complete that next step, you have excess oxidized molecules or free radicals running around and they will eventually cause you harm. It’s essential to get through phase one and two, so phase three can cart toxins out of your body for you. So, don’t think of detoxifying as just taking juices and avoiding alcohol, this will minimize chemical build up for sure, but it won’t complete detoxification for you. Instead get informed and get help to make the changes necessary to support all phases, so your body can perform healthy detoxification for you.
Sleep disturbances, moods, weight gain, unwanted hair growth or loss, menstrual problems, infertility and fatigue, are some of the symptoms of hormonal imbalance for both men and women. As chemical messengers that influence every part of our being, our hormones are easily disrupted by environmental chemicals and impaired detoxification. A disruption can start a dominoes-like cascade of hormonal imbalance. This can lead to many annoying symptoms, debilitating and painful symptoms, and complex illnesses including cancer. Fortunately there is much we can do to heal and protect ourselves from harm. I can offer assessment, diet and lifestyle interventions, and a number of helpful functional tests to ensure you are addressing the underlying causes and getting results.
Your microbiome affects every part of your body and wellbeing. All of the healing processes above rely heavily on a diverse, pathogen free, healthy microbiome. The science of this century has opened a window into the extraordinary microscopic world of the human body! New information is available every month about how our microbes care for our wellbeing. Microbes protect our digestive tract and immunity; they are important for neurotransmitter production and messaging to our brains. They produce vitamins for us, and extract the goodness that we can’t, from many different plants. More specifically scientists are finding that low numbers or absent strains of particular bacteria are linked to conditions such as Alzheimer’s, obesity, depression and Parkinson’s disease, in fact, the list is long and growing!
Growing a healthy microbiome in today’s world takes some conscious effort, we need to feed our microbiome… different stains like different meals just like each of us; protect it… which means stop killing it off; and we can support diversity by providing more strains with fermented foods and probiotics.
Many people today are taking probiotics and enjoying a variety of fermented foods, I suggest that you be cautious in doing this, take it slowly and take note of any changes/symptoms. Many people get good results; many people get good results initially then a number of new symptoms arise; and some people don’t tolerate probiotics from the start. It all depends on the state of your gut, any pathogens present and the diversity of your microbiome; it is often a good idea to take probiotics under professional guidance.
